STAND-UP SATURDAY
Bill Burr is a comedian who has evaded what it means to be ‘mainstream’ for most of his career, but, that seems to have finally run its course. Burr has steadily made his way into TV and film as well though, he will always return to the mic stand when the proper rant takes place in his mind. It finally has yet again and he takes the stage live at Red Rocks in a sold out event all but certain to catch the headlines of the news media. This of course is meaningless, because Burr is too big to fail.
As Netflix seems to be the last hope for freedom of expression in the world of content, that’s where Bill Burr: Live at Red Rocks inevitably ended up
As Netflix seems to be the last hope for freedom of expression in the world of content, that’s where Bill Burr: Live at Red Rocks inevitably ended up. Burr is back to his old tricks in this special with is raw takes and abstract points of view. Forget being politically correct, as he never has been and it doesn’t look like he intends to start now. The comedian goes off on a tirade regarding everything that has played out in the public since the pandemic started. As usual, he is on his own side. He takes not one position over another, at least, not without putting his own opinion on the topic into the mix. Above everything else, he’s after the laugh, and he gets them.

Those watching at home may not share the same enthusiasm as his live crowd did, but then again, Bill Burr has never been a comedian that most of the general public can tolerate. He’s willing to make fun of anyone and everyone, and this special is likely to open him up to criticism from all sides of the political spectrum, women, the transgender community, religious people, and the ‘woke’ brigade. There’s no pandering in this show, so any who choose to tune in simply for the hope that he might stroke a few egos, it’s probably best not to even turn this on. Burr’s major triumph in his latest stand-up special is in holding up the mirror to his audience, live and globally, forcing fans to address their hypocrisy, their personal biases, and to be reminded of the importance of laughing at one another in good fun. He also manages to venture into his personal life, addressing how being a married man and father has altered the way he conducts himself in public as well as in his home life.
Bill Burr may be growing as a person and changing the way he does things but this certainly doesn’t apply to his comedy. If anything, he’s doubling down. There is no topic too taboo or current event he’s afraid to discuss openly, comically expressing how he views everything without fear of recourse or career consequence. He’s not untouchable, but he is as close to being as such assuming he continues to keep his nose clean legally, which has obviously never been an issue of his. Bill Burr: Live at Red Rocks is not one to miss.
