It’s almost difficult to believe that nearly two decades ago now, NSYNC’s favorite son decided to give his solo career a go with his debut album Justified. Not long after that he made it official that he would be leaving the group to do his own thing. What a decision that turned out to be. He has since released multiple albums to critical and commercial success, cleaned up award seasons, and even ventured into Hollywood as an actor along the way, just because. Only just a few years ago however, Justin Timberlake at the Live Lounge had the pleasure of headlining for the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge for their first live concert in London at the BBC Radio Theater.

Justin Timberlake at the Live Lounge had the pleasure of headlining for the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge for their first live concert in London at the BBC Radio Theater.

It was about eight years ago, and right around the time that Timberlake had returned to music. Coming off a vibrant movie career, Timberlake returned to release The 20/20 Experience soon followed by a part two to the album. As part of his record promotion, he made his way over to London to perform a roughly half hour set to a very welcoming crowd. Full of energy and enthusiasm for his new music, the acclaimed artist put on a show showcasing some of his newer tunes with even a song from the past (Rock Your Body) to give his fans in attendance a taste of nostalgia. In addition, he was joined by the band The Tennessee Kids to accompany him, who are also featured on the 20/20 albums.

The London special was short though a great jumping off point for Timberlake and company to promote the album effectively without overdoing it. They did five songs in total, with one being a cover of the Jacksons and of course his prior hit. The other three songs were from his 20/20 albums which were Take Back the Night, Let The Groove Get In, and Mirrors. All of the songs in this mini-concert were up-tempo and performed with great vivacity. The Tennessee Kids were a huge asset to the performance with everyone from the brass section to the backup singers adding soul to the performance and ensuring that Timberlake could catch his breath during the more difficult parts of the show. The audience energy was equally accommodating to the performers, as the entire thing felt as though Timberlake had never even stopped making music. It was a definitely an acceptable forum for Justin Timberlake to make his way back into music, and setting the stage for the tours and music that was soon to follow afterwards.

Readers may remember seeing this show when it happened live, but some may not, which is no problem at all being that the concert is now on YouTube. JT has since released another album since then, but The 20/20 Experience record will always be remembered as the album that brought him back into the arena and into the recording booth. As such, it may be fun to revisit his throwback tunes and after all, no one has to pay for it.
