Try as everyone might, it’s tough to ignore that Covid-19 has essentially taken over the world. It has unfortunately seeped its way into everything. It dominates conversations, news headlines, and for artists, it’s even made its way into music. Amber Mark is the latest to have been influenced by the relentless disease that has been plaguing the planet for more than two years now. The musician who has released multiple singles and EPs has now debuted a full album, and to say the least, it’s obvious that Covid-19 has found her place inside her psyche, thus showing in her music.
Three Dimensions Deep is sure to be Mark’s coming out party to the rest of the world. She not only sings every song, but she also writes and produces everything she performs.
This aside, Three Dimensions Deep is sure to be Mark’s coming out party to the rest of the world. She not only sings every song, but she also writes and produces everything she performs. Her debut record addresses the stages that likely most of population has gone through during the pandemic. Anxiety, depression, uncertainty, hopelessness, insecurity are just a few to name and Mark hits the nail on the head of every one of them. She’s effectively able to express each feeling in an exceptionally creative and vulnerable way. No song is absent substance nor do they lack appeal or fail to keep attention, Mark showcasing an unreal ability to play within genres. She is poised, charismatic, and above all else, her music is sophisticated and ahead of the trends.
It’s almost difficult to decide what she does best. Her music production is right on par with major record labels, meaning she has no use for them and hopefully will avoid them altogether, maintaining complete control of everything she puts out. The lyrics on every song are top shelf blue label, carefully put together in such a way where their meanings are obvious but also without a hint of pretentiousness and with no need to be deciphered. The sound and feeling of each song also stands alone fine by themselves, limiting anyone from putting her into a specific box, even though there’s a very clear consistency within the album as a whole. The tracks that command the most attention are probably What It Is, Turnin’ Pages and the opening track One. Each has a specific topic of importance, and all have an approach that grants them distinction from the rest of the album. Whether it’s the way she sings it, the content, or the classification of the song, Amber Mark has the ‘It’ factor when it comes to musical experimentation.
She’s truly a master of all things music. Her singing is seasoned, her writing is intelligent and insightful, and her producing prowess is incredibly practiced far beyond what anyone would typically expect. Most importantly, she’s able to articulate her state of mind in a song that artists of the mainstream seem unable to do even with the best writers the industry has to offer. Three Dimensions Deep is her ticket to the show, and ideally a seat in the front row. Anyone who doesn’t know her now, certainly will soon.
