Years before the market of music ever became convoluted and over saturated, there were singers like Dean Martin. Martin was a part of the famous ‘Rat Pack’ alongside music greats like Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. as well as laying down his own body of work that newer singers have only succeeded in mimicking. Dean Martin made it all the way to 1995 before finally passing, leaving behind him thirty three studio albums. There weren’t too many of his albums that didn’t produce hits in one way or another; Welcome to My World was one of many that became popular and is still an easy listen.
Dean Martin goes solo in this record, singing all ten songs with the aid of producer Jimmy Brown. Welcome to My World was released in 1967, Martin at this time already a force in the industry. Martin has something of a ‘country’ streak in this album as opposed to the genre of the music he’s most known for. The songs are slower paced and the content, though basic, is a stylized mesh of pop and country that gives the ten track album a touch of variety whilst still remaining a fairly undeviating collection. The entire thing is a mix-match of newer songs (for the time) and songs that he had released on previous albums.
Welcome to My World is no less than a ballot with the lyrics inviting love and romance
As usual, Martin’s vocals are smooth like butter. His pitch is steady, landing each note correctly and in a time where auto-tune wasn’t an option. He’s not really taking risks or trying new things, but this album exudes self-awareness – he knows what kind of artist he is. The songs on the album don’t differ from one another too much, but there are some that catch attention for their own reasons. In The Chapel in the Moonlight has a melody and a backup harmony that syncs well with the band’s arrangement. Little Ole Wine Drinker, Me is arguably the most country sounding of the bunch, a harmonica accompaniment in the distance with a plain drum beat as Martin sings of traveling, sadness, and a woman on his mind. The title track Welcome to My World is no less than a ballot with the lyrics inviting love and romance, and Martin laying a soft vocal performance overlaid with that classic orchestra backing that have made his songs iconic. It’s an overall relaxing listen with Dean Martin singing with a tenderness that has only continued to gain more appeal even since his passing.
It was not the first or last of his musical endeavors. Dean Martin is a musician that is all but immortal due to the body of work that he’s left the world. His solo performances, reprisals, and collaborations will forever be remembered as some of the most influential music to ever be recorded. Dean Martin fans will need no convincing, but newcomers fret not as the album is a very quick listen; half an hour should be all that’s needed to get through it, available on Spotify and YouTube.
