Contrary to popular belief, there is nothing brave about being overweight and it’s even less courageous to publicize it as though it actually took any work to get that way. The available statistics actually show that the vast majority of people with weight issues have the problems they have due to their own self-inflicted habits. In other words, and sorry to say, but yes, it is on the fault of the individual. The good news is this can be remedied. One man was even ‘brave’ enough to try, and just a few years ago, he documented his journey on tape.
Facing the Fat is Kenny Saylors’ story. This story, is real. Saylors began his weight loss journey sitting right over three hundred pounds before he decided to do something about it.
Facing the Fat is Kenny Saylors’ story. This story, is real. Saylors began his weight loss journey sitting right over three hundred pounds before he decided to do something about it. Having conducted his own research along with consulting with medical professionals, Saylors decided he would embark on a long term water fast with the hopes of restoring his body to a healthier state. His goal to break the world record for fasting was captured by Sideways Films, shooting his fifty-five day experience for the world to see without the worry of what others might think. Nothing is truly braver than making a change, and Kenny Saylors’ determination and thirst for change cannot be understated.
The production team did an excellent job of taking the audience through Saylors’ day to day activities whilst on his fast. Saylors’ interviews with doctors, conversations with others who struggle with eating, and interactions with those in his personal life were all on display completely unfiltered. Not only does Facing the Fat give plenty of ‘Kenny’ for the viewers, but it is also educational. Throughout the documentary, multiple stats and relevant information about obesity is offered up and sourced. Saylors not only does a service of letting people inside of his personal plight, but he provides the reality of obesity that is often uncomfortable for people to confront. No one likes to be told that they are at fault, but this is why Facing the Fat was such a necessary project. Kenny Saylors blames only himself for his decision to live an unhealthy life, and he faces the issue by knowing that it is also only he himself that can make the correct changes. His quest to achieve health is an inspiring one that is sure to get those who need it in line before it’s too late.
Facing the Fat is not without flaws, but it’s the message it sends that is more important than its delivery. Obesity is a literal epidemic right now, especially in the United States. If it takes someone like Kenny Saylors to answer all of the tough questions and to show the difficulties of weight loss for everyone to wake up and make a change, then so be it. People rarely ever get anywhere without the proper nudge, and Saylors is one of the best people capable of that. Go now and see, on the Real Stories YouTube channel.
