Joby Saad The Village Idiot may be new to the Dry Bar Comedy platform, but as a comedian he’s been riding it out for decades. Saad is a true to form comedian though, meaning this guy will probably never end up in huge deals or on the mainstream circuit. He just goes out on tour, performs live, and collects. Programs like Dry Bar Comedy will at least give him and others like him some larger reach in terms of market building. In one of their latest uploads, the online comedy streamer features Saad in a recently released stand-up special for a packed house.
Saad is incredibly unconventional in his approach, at least in comparison to how most comedians today operate. It’s actually not as easy to spot where he’s going with things, and the punchlines come in at awkwardly random times yet always seem to land. He doesn’t perform with much consistency either, as each topic is discussed arbitrarily and without prior context or the need to even attempt to provide any. Somehow though, he manages to make it work. Very few comedians operate in similar fashion, which likely points as to why he’s not that popular. Popularity however, is not necessarily indicative of what is good or bad. He is simply just not widely known, but who knows, he might even prefer it that way.
If the measure of what makes a comedian funny being whether or not they get laughs, then at the very least, Saad has found his crowd in this special. They do laugh, ergo, he is funny. Even with the unusual formula he appears to use, he manages to do what he’s doing without any problems. His transitions, whilst sudden and with little warning, are sharp enough to see absent any issues of being able to keep up. He also includes some variety so as to not seem circular or as though everything he says is the same. There’s the occasional crowd work (though he never speaks to anyone directly), an aside here or there, plenty of sound effects, some physical comedy, and a touch of observational humor. He doesn’t do any one thing better than most comics, but he does demonstrate the ability to cover a broad range of comedy without living and dying by one particular style of delivery. Expect no intelligent social commentary or ardent speeches about the state of the world either. This show is only designed to be silly.
Joby Saad The Village Idiot is doing what he does the way he’s always done it, and it looks as though it’s working out. He’s sort of ‘old school’ in a sense, coming off as though he believes in the notion of stand-up comedy being a lower class art form. The guy is a joker in every sense of the word. He’s not out to change the world or make people think. The only mission is to get the laugh, and to make a living doing it. Any views will help him continue, so head over to Dry Bar’s YouTube channel to see his special for free.
