It’s the most wonderful time of the year, as it said in most family circles. Stockings are hanging, trees are up, lights are on, and turkeys are cooking in ovens everywhere. None of this is complete without a solid Christmas movie, and today’s write up has just the thing. Families everywhere will watch the classics like A Story, How The Grinch Stole Christmas, and maybe even A Christmas Carol. In Christmas 2020 though take this opportunity to see what is likely to go down as an eventual Christmas classic starring Emilia Clarke and Henry Golding. Last Christmas is available everywhere for viewing and streaming.
Last Christmas, taking place in London, Kate is a girl who makes decisions in life that are for herself and ONLY, herself.
First off, remember, it’s a Christmas movie. It’s not meant to change the world, clean up at award seasons, or redefine the standard of movie making. It’s just meant to be enjoyed, maybe tug on the heart strings a bit, help foster a festive environment, and maybe elicit a laugh or two. Last Christmas does all of the above. Taking place in London, Kate is a girl who makes decisions in life that are for herself and ONLY, herself. Everything changes when she meets the odd and mysterious Tom who after a few interactions, helps her alter the course of her life so as to take better care of her body and to put others before her own desires. Led by a well-known cast, Last Christmas succeeds in teaching a heartfelt lesson about making the most out of life as selflessly as possible with the time given.
The most interesting thing about the movie is that much of it is based on the song by George Michael. Loosely inspired by Michael’s composition, the movie is cleverly plotted as though it’s a play on words from the song lyrics. There’s even an eventual twist that gives the movie its holiday spirit. Emilia Clarke gives a touching performance as Kate, showing she can separate herself from the popular series of which brought her worldwide fame. Henry Golding’s charming outing as Tom assists in helping him pad his stat sheet, keeping him on pace to his inevitable stardom. Michelle Yeoh and Emma Thompson are also enticing, their characters serving as accountable counterparts to Kate, reminding her of the responsibilities she has as an adult and that the world does not revolve around her. Director Peter Feig arranges everyone in their proper place to achieve a holiday spectacle that is enjoyable and emotionally gratifying during the Christmas season.
Everyone celebrates differently and everyone holds different beliefs on what Christmas is actually about. This might be the case, but if one thing is for sure, most anyone on Christmas will be able to appreciate a story like this one. Last Christmas has all of the ingredients for a fun family get together, or even a solo sit-down on Christmas. Critics have had their say, but honestly, a movie like this is can do without any of that. See it. Don’t see it. Just know that the option is there.
