The events of September 9, 2011 shook the entire world to its core. To think that the most powerful and prosperous nation in the world was susceptible to a terror attack on their own soil was a shock to not only the American public, but to the rest of the outside nations as well. Some people believe the story ended with the fall of World Trade Center, but the story only gets deeper. The United States’ intelligence agencies have since been hell bent on preventing another terror attack by any means necessary. The Report outlines what measures were taken as a result, and the issues that arose from the actions that were taken.

The Report is a based on true accounts. The events which played out were due to Senator Dianne Feinstein enlisting the aid of Senate Intelligence Committee member Daniel J.

The Report is a based on true accounts. The events which played out were due to Senator Dianne Feinstein enlisting the aid of Senate Intelligence Committee member Daniel J. Jones, who at her direction would embark on a years-long journey to get to the bottom of the CIA’s questionable tactics when detaining suspected terrorists. Jones, with the help of his small team, went on to examine more than six million pages of documents in the hopes of uncovering the truth of what the CIA was doing, as well as what they destroyed and what they hid from the public. The methods in which they were operating are what came into question, hence an investigation that became a legal fight between two government entities. Unlawful coercion, and even torture were at the forefront of what the CIA was involved in and Jones’ report was about one thing: accountability.

The Sundance selection is a monster sized bundle of information packed into two hours of screen time. Scott Z. Burns deserves credit for putting a puzzle like this together, being that it’s only his second feature length project. The movie jumps back and forth through time, has many flashbacks, and is has an ample amount of characters. The arrangement of the incidents can be challenging to follow, but not impossible. The acting is solid, Adam Driver driving home a career winner and Jon Hamm and Michael C. Hall showing up to play in equal respect. Annette Bening serves up an interesting portrayal as Senator Feinstein, as it looks as though her character choices were not a mirror reflection of the real life Senator that Americans are very publicly familiar with. She looks the part and dresses the part, but she does do things her own way, which is not a crime though not customary when imitating a non fictionalized version of a real person.

The Report gets to the root of governmental problems, and though much is over emphasized for dramatic effect, it’s as honest a depiction of the circumstances that it could be. It’s definitely proof that Amazon Prime is becoming a worthy competitor when it comes to purchasing rights to content. Prime Video still has the movie on stream as of now, so take the opportunity to see a picture that does more than just entertain; it informs.
