He was even the youngest ever heavyweight champion, a record still held to this day. His journey was anything but easy, and who better to tell than he himself? He does just that in the HBO special Mike Tyson: Undisputed Truth. The Broadway production was filmed for home audiences, directed by Spike Lee, giving Mike Tyson an open forum to discuss his enigmatic life and inspiring career.

Iron Mike shares the story of his humble beginnings and divulges the details of his early criminal life before seguing into meeting legendary trainer Cus D’Mato, setting his life on a course of greatness, drama, a brief fall from grace, and an eventual rise from the ashes. He showcases his growth as a human, his gained wisdom, and he takes the audience to his darkest places in a state of absolute unrestrained vulnerability.
Knowing that he is not an actor, Tyson makes no attempt at pretending to be something that he’s not. This is perhaps what makes Undisputed Truth such an impactful show. He’s just himself. The beast of who he was is not fully suppressed, but behind the curtain Tyson displays his humanity. With the assistance of the clever writing, he even gets more than a few laughs. Being that his life has at some points been less than stellar, he uses this production to laugh at himself and to move on from his more erratically behaved days. Spike Lee directs the show in a format more equated to that of a power point presentation. Lee accompanies Tyson with a projector screen to show old photos and video clips whilst he stands in front of it, recounting to the audience what each piece represents to his life. The choice to do so is smart, giving Undisputed Truth an ample amount of animation to go with Tyson’s heartfelt lecture. Together Lee and Tyson present a show that not only feels honest, but IS honest.
Many have made their mind up about Mike Tyson. Some believe he’s one of the greatest heavyweight champions who’s ever lived, where some believe he is a terrible person who was given far too many chances.
