Jokes For Quaratine

It’s a weird time for comedians in the twenty-first century. Now more than ever, people who feel offended by jokes are becoming more empowered to speak up about it. Speaking up is one thing, but interrupting comedians during their work is another. It’s unacceptable and yet, it is happening. Just ask Nimesh Patel. The comedian was subject to interruption and removal from the stage at Colombia University during his show, though ironically, it propelled him into the spotlight once the news of the occurrence spread. In the incident in question, Patel stood his ground and has since continued to perform live shows.

With everything that transpired, and for how he handled the situation, he deserves to be on everyone’s radar. In August of 2019, the comedian made an appearance at the Comedy Cellar in New York, and Patel has uploaded the performance on YouTube for free. The hour set consists of Patel sharing his personal beliefs on various aspects of society. These include his unorthodox points of view on ‘the right’ vs. ‘the left’, his parents, the dating scene, being an Indian (more specifically, an Indian comedian), racial stereotypes, and racism. Though he confronts hot topics that tend to dominate political landscapes, Patel isn’t political as a comedian and makes no attempt to shape other’s perception of the world today. His goal is to discuss these subjects with only the hope of finding what’s funny about them. In this regard, he’s certainly not lacking.

Patel is comfortable onstage, exemplifying the presence of a comedian who is seasoned and experienced. His set-up and delivery isn’t necessarily sharp, but it’s relaxed and executed with a playful style that sees Patel showing the audience that yes, he also finds himself to be funny. He adds a fair bit of shock value into the mix, yet most of what he talks about isn’t all that controversial. This is actually what makes him having been kicked off a stage that much more ridiculous. He says what others are thinking and likely sometimes afraid to say, but he never does so in a manner that could be construed as disrespectful. Nearly everything he says is always at the very least, structured as a joke. He walks right up to the line but never quite crosses it. It’s here where his strength as a joke teller really lies, as Patel isn’t afraid to say things the way he sees them even if it might put someone off.

Nimesh Patel isn’t doing something that hasn’t been done before, but the best part about him is that he stands by his jokes for better or worse. The worse kind of comedian is someone who will apologize when unnecessary, something that he does not need to do and hopefully will never do. Because comedians are an important part of society in that they are the only people who really force the general public to examine society through a different lens. If there’s one thing he’s doing right, it is that.
