Looking for a quick binge watch? Sneakerheads is just the thing to pass the time. Netflix premiered a six episode season around this time last year and it’s still making the rounds. It’s an incredibly quick watch, each episode only lasting a bit over twenty minutes and the show itself is fairly fast paced. Starring Allen Maldonado and Vine star Andrew Bachelor (King Bach), it’s a duo series that’s very easy to follow, basic enough to potentially enjoy, and effortless enough to watch without any need to overanalyse any of it.
Sneakerheads follows Devin (Maldonado) living a standard working class life with his wife and two kids.
Sneakerheads follows Devin (Maldonado) living a standard working class life with his wife and two kids. Devin used to be a ‘sneaker head’, a collector and flipper of rare or expensive branded shoes such as Jordan, Nikes, etc. The audience will find Devin at some time after the game broke him mentally and financially. He’s living a more than average life, until his old friend Bobby (Bachelor) stumbles back into his life, and consequentially, pulls him back into the world of sneaker trading even though Devin knows that it’s a bad idea. From there, the duo spends the series trying to land the ultimate score all while trying to get around every obstacle that seems to pop up every time they seem to be in the clear.
Full disclosure, this show is basic. The plot is as simple and formulaic as can be, even considering the basis of the show. The production quality isn’t over elaborate, though it does work for what the show is trying to do. The acting and directing is standard, though this isn’t necessarily a deal breaker. The show was created by Uncle Drew writer Jay Logingo, so the writing and humour is within a similar realm. It is humorous, though comedy and style of comedy is subjective amongst comedy fans, so some will find this funny and it will not be for others. Andrew Bachelor drives much of the shows pacing with his high level energy and his signature comedic style that made him famous on Vine, YouTube, and Instagram. Nori and Stuey played by Jearnest Corchado and Matthew Josten, are fun characters that help Devin and Bobby to effectively form their own ‘squad’, each adding their own elements to the show. Then of course there’s Allen Maldonado who plays well as the straight man Devin, almost as though he’s the Seinfeld of the group the four of them sort of accidently made together.
What’s most interesting about Sneakerheads is that it opens up other lanes of content for Netflix. This show obviously won’t be for the average TV fan, but for people that understand this particular culture and the funny side of it. At this point, it’s unclear of whether or not the show will be granted a second season. Still, season one is short enough to get through quickly and if nothing else, it will be a different experience than most audiences are used to and that’s on the plus side.
